Surviving
Drought
In the section on South Africa’s biomes we saw that climate influences the types of plants that grow in a region. The western parts of the country are drier than the eastern parts, so many of the plants from the Succulent Karoo, Nama Karoo and Fynbos Biomes are adapted to survive drought. Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate, which means that most rain falls during the cool winter months but the summers are hot and dry. In this section we will find out how some of Cape Town’s lowland plants manage to make it through the long summer droughts. |
