Living in Water

Wetlands used to be very common in the lowlands of the City of Cape Town. Although many of these wetlands have been destroyed, you can still find different types of wetlands in the city:

  • Seasonal wetlands are found at Edith Stephens Wetland Park and at Kenilworth Racecourse.

  • Permanent fresh water wetlands are found at Rondevlei, Zeekoevlei and Princess Vlei.

  • Estuaries include Zandvlei, the mouth of the Lourens River and the lower reaches of Rietvlei.

This section briefly introduces how a few of typical wetland plants and animals survive in these different wetland habitats in the lowlands of Cape Town.
