Frogs and Seasonal Wetlands

  • Frogs like the Micro Frog and Leopard Toad breed during winter when the rain fills seasonal wetlands and rivers.

  • The adult Leopard Toad does not live in water for most of the year but burrows or hides in damp soil or under leaf litter. It breeds after rain in July or August, laying eggs in fresh water ponds. The tadpoles develop rapidly into small frogs, which leave the wetlands and rivers by October, before they dry out.

  • The Micro Frog lays its eggs in seasonal wetlands in June but it takes nearly six months for its tadpoles to develop into frogs. Sometimes the wetlands dry out before metamorphosis is complete and the young do not survive.
