If you live in Cape Town’s northern suburbs (e.g. Bothasig, Brackenfell, Durbanville, Kraaifontein and Parow), your closest natural areas managed by the City are Bracken, Durbanville and Tygerberg Nature Reserves and the Uitkamp Wetlands. Can you find these areas on the Nature Reserves map? The Uitkamp Wetland does not have visitor facilities, but local residents formed the Uitkamp Action Group in 2006 to help conserve this precious wetland. It is home to a restio (Ischyrolepis duthieae: Near Threatened) and two frogs, the Cape Caco (Cacosternum capense: Vulnerable) and the Cape Rain Frog (Breviceps gibbosus: Threatened) that are on the Red List. The wetland is surrounded by the D’Urbanvale residential area. It is threatened by invasive alien plants (e.g. Port Jackson, Kikuyu Grass and other garden plants) as well as polluted storm water from the development.
